Louise Hawthorne, Managing Partner, Process Inc

"An Industry-level Approach to Initiating Software Process Improvement Based on the SEI IDEAL Model"

Louise Hawthorne is managing partner in Process Inc's Canadian operation.

As a member of the SEI's Software Process Assessment project under Watts Humphrey, she contributed to the SEI's original assessment approach. Louise then founded Process Inc, which became the only Canadian company licensed by the SEI to perform these assessments (and one of only nine worldwide).

She returned to the SEI as a Resident Affiliate to participate in the development of their new appraisal method. She is an SEI-authorized leader in both methods of appraisal, and has a wide range of experience in assessment and improvement across more than 20 organizations world-wide.

Lindy Abry, Manager, Quality Assurance, SHL Systemhouse Ottawa Global Development Centre

"Getting Executive Buy-in and Support"

Lindy Abry has 20 years of adventures in the IT industry, first with General Motors, then Systemhouse. She is experienced in all aspects of the systems life cycle, on applications for business, healthcare and government.

With 8 years as Quality Assurance Manager, Lindy currently leads the QA team in the Systemhouse Ottawa Global Development Centre (GDC). A large organization of software specialists, working on large complex mission-critical systems for world-wide clients, the GDC was led to its June 1995 ISO9001 registration by Lindy and her team.

Lindy also leads process improvement initiatives for all projects and functional areas within the GDC and is now working toward SEI Level 3.

Chandan Banerjee, Manager, Software Quality Assurance, Newbridge Networks

"Newbridge's Strategy & Motivation for Starting Process Improvement"

Chandan Banerjee graduated from Concordia University in 1985 with a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. He is presently working on his M.Sc. at University of Ottawa.

Mr. Banerjee has spent four years as a designer for flight simulation systems, five years in Project Management/Consulting and the last two years as Manager of Software Quality at Newbridge Networks.

His varied experience has allowed him to truly appreciate the links between design, project management, customer expectation and the ever nebulous "Quality Process".

Bill Samulack, Software Technology Leader (Kanata), Canadian Marconi Company

"My Project Is Different" - Dealing with Differences Within an Organization

With a Master's degree in Information Systems, Bill Samulack has 18 years experience, focusing on high reliability real-time software and systems development.

Having been involved in all stages of a product's life cycle, Bill's current responsibilities are to improve the efficiency of Canadian Marconi's software processes and practices in all aspects of software engineering and software project management. In addition to real-time computer-based systems, Bill's interests include management practices, development methodologies and processes, and tool/language technologies, toward fostering a productive environment.

Raymond B. Carbonneau, Software Engineering Manager, Thomson-CSF Systems Canada Inc.

"Establishing an SEPG in a Small Company"

Raymond Carbonneau has been a software engineer with Thomson-CSF Systems for approximately seven years, following his work at Hymarc Inc. and Computing Devices.

In 1993, he was appointed to lead Thomson Systems' Software Engineering Group (previously the Command and Control group). The next year, Mr. Carbonneau established the Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG), and has been its chairman since that time.

Mr. Carbonneau is currently Project Manager of the company's largest-ever software development project, PM of various smaller projects, and head of the computer resources group.
