to cater both to the needs of organizations and individuals
experienced in SPI, and to those new to it.
Different events will address different levels of experience,
e.g. novices and more experienced organizations; in addition,
at least once a year there will be a general session of
interest to all
to provide information about, and encourage, the programs
of other organizations relevant to the SPIN community
September 19: Getting Started in Software Process
Improvement [SPI]
7:00-10:00pm
This session will provide real-life stories and
an overview of SPI.
It targets those new to software process improvement,
and those with some experience in it who may wish to
hear the challenges and successes of others or
contribute their own to the discussion.
This event is organized by our sister Montreal SPIN
and will be held at the Radisson in Montreal. A
four-day conference, it includes a full day of
tutorials as well.
Oct 28th-30th: 6th International Conference on Software
Quality
The Ottawa SPIN encourages attendance at this
Ottawa conference.
Late November: Software Process Unwrapped
PROPOSED An in-depth presentation of one key process,
such as Project Management or Requirements
Management.
Targeted to those with experience in Software
Process Improvement, there should be information
of value to most of the SPIN community.
The November event will be the evening of Thursday the
21st at the Citadel Inn, and will feature Michael Mah
of QSM Associates, speaking on "Core Software Metrics,
Their Role in Politics, Process, and Risk Management".
Michael is Director and Principal of QSM Associates.
Since 1978, QSM has been an industry research leader on
software productivity management, metrics, and lifecycle
modeling.
Recommended by one of our SPIN members, Michael has
received praise for his sessions at SPINs south of the
border. A more detailed description of the talk and
Michael's bio will be sent out with the registration
details.
January, 1997: The Great SPI Debate!
PROPOSED
A HOT topic of interest to Ottawa SPINers, e.g.:
Which is better: ISO, the CMM, TickIt, Trillium?
Is SPI only for large companies
Why do SPI at all?
Is Level 5 achievable or madness?
What topics interest you?
This session is intended to be of general interest
to the Ottawa SPIN community. Let us know what
you'd most like to hear at this event!
The Sept. 19th program is oriented to those new to software
process improvement, and those experiencing difficulty in some
areas, such as getting buy-in. It is hoped that this will help
inform newcomers, as well as provide a roadmap to understanding
and taking best advantage of other process improvement events.
The November program is targeted to those experienced in SPI,
although it should appeal to, and provide good information to
all.
The new year kick-off in January should be a lively event,
mixing differing viewpoints and contrasting opinions with a
little fun!
Who Should Get Involved?
The Ottawa SPIN will be of interest to anyone in the Ottawa
area working with the processes of software development and
delivery: designers, managers, testers, customers, suppliers,
purchasers,...
The first event, tailored for those with little experience in
SPI, will interest anyone involved in software-based products
in the Ottawa area, who feels there is a need for their
organization to become engaged in SPI.
Hear the challenges faced by other local companies and their
insights to better managing this strategic resource. What
you'll get from this is how a focus on software processes can
yield huge benefits in your organization.
If you're interested in volunteering to help organize events,
have your company sponsor them, even assist in other SPIN
areas, such as our web page, market research, membership or
logistics, please contact Gerry Vreeswijk at 234-8638 ext 603,
or gerryv@itnet.ca .
Registration
Announcements will precede each event by a few weeks, and will
include registration information.
