Privacy: From Concept to Reality

DATE: March 21, 2002

PLACE: Rideau Room, Sheraton Hotel, 150 Albert Street

SPEAKERS: Ross Hodgins and Diane Boland, Treasury Board.

EVENT ABSTRACT

Privacy is a critical success factor for e-business. Public opinion research, media headlines, court cases and recent private sector legislation all point to its significance in government and business. The Chief Information Officer Branch (CIOB) of the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat has developed a tool, the Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA), for business and technology managers. The PIA is designed to ensure that the privacy of individuals and their personal information are treated as a core consideration throughout the design, re-design, development and implementation of an IM/IT project. Based on universal privacy principles, it provides managers and decision-makers with the information necessary to make fully informed policy, system design and procurement decisions based on an understanding of privacy implications and risks.
