The Emerging consensus on the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK)
DATE: October 18, 2001
PLACE: Rideau Room, Sheraton Hotel, 150 Albert Street
SPEAKER: Pierre Bourque, École de Technologie Supérieure
In spite of the millions of software professionals worldwide and the ubiquitous presence of software in our society, software engineering has not reached the status of a legitimate engineering discipline and a recognized profession. In other engineering disciplines, the accreditation of university curricula and the licensing and certification of practicing professionals are taken very seriously and seen as critical to the constant upgrading of professionals and, hence, the improvement of the level of professional practice. Recognizing a core body of knowledge is pivotal to the development and accreditation of university curricula and the licensing and certification of professionals.
The IEEE Computer Society, with the support of a consortium of industrial sponsors, is developing a Guide to the Software Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) to achieve consensus on the core subset of knowledge characterising the software engineering discipline.
Who should attend?
By attending this presentation you will:
Pierre Bourque is a
Professor at the École de technologie supérieure (engineering
school of the Université du Québec network of institutions)
where he teaches graduate and undergraduate software engineering courses.
From 1995 to 2000, he was the Director of Applied Research at the Software
Engineering Management Research Laboratory of the Université du Québec
à Montréal (UQAM). From 1987 to 1995, he was involved in software
technology assessment, database design, software engineering, data modeling
and data administration at the National Bank of Canada. Since 1998, he is
the co-editor of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge
projects sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and funded by numerous industrial
partners. He is an IEEE Senior Member and will be awarded in October 2001
the Outstanding Contribution Award from the IEEE Computer Society for "outstanding
leadership and technical contributions as co-editor of the Guide to the
Software Engineering Body of Knowledge".
